Adrien Broner prepares for “The Flair”
Welterweight star Adrien Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) is set to make his ring return against Blair Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) on May 31, after posting an unofficial announcement on Instagram.
The multi-weight world champion – who is now the self-proclaimed “Can Man” – took to social media on Tuesday, revealing that his dwindling boxing career is not yet over.
The 34-year-old comes off a 10-round unanimous decision win over Bill Hutchinson in Miami, where he comfortably dismantled his limited opponent back in May last year.
His one-sided performance, which came after a two year layoff, took place on a show that was put together by Hall of Fame promoter Don King.
However, while the American’s fans will be eagerly anticipating his next outing, there has been no mention a promotion, broadcaster or venue for Broner’s showdown with Cobbs.
Coming off a wide unanimous decision victory over former world champion Maurice Hooker, Cobbs will no doubt be embracing the opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage.
But the performance, albeit impressive, took place back in August 2022, perhaps making his opponent – whose career has been plagued by long periods of inactivity – the more prepared out of the two.
Earlier that year, before he secured his best win as a professional, Cobbs was stopped by rising contender Alexis Rocha in the ninth round of their contest.
With the majority of his recent fights being staged on DAZN, it will be interesting to see where his clash with Broner – still one of the most marketable names in the sport – will ultimately land.
Cobbs recently teamed up with esteemed boxing coach Justin Gamber and are reportedly working in harmony as a perfect fit for each other.
Since losing to eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao in 2019, a fight that he was more than competitive in, Broner has failed to deliver a performance that builds excitement around his prospects in boxing.
Perhaps this will change on May 31, though.
