Adam Azim aims for the top: “I want to be undisputed”
Adam Azim dreams of one day becoming unified world champion but knows he needs to flatten friend Ohara Davies to get there.
Nicknamed ‘The Assassin’ for his devastating accuracy and knockout power, with eight of his 11 wins finishing early, the unbeaten former European super-lightweight champion has been tipped for the top.
The promising puncher, still only 22, was left disappointed when a big fight against Harlem Eubank failed to materialise earlier this year.
But he is well aware of the step up in class that awaits when he locks horns with experienced brawler Davies in a highly anticipated British bout which will headline London’s Copper Box on Saturday night.
Davies has only lost three fights during his decade-long career, with two of those coming at the hands of classy duo Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall.
“I want to become world champion and unified world champion,” a bullish Azim told SportsBoom.com.
“I want to be undisputed and hopefully stay undefeated, these are my goals and ambitions in my life.
“But I have to wait for the right time for a world title fight because my division is a dangerous division.
“Ohara Davies is a dangerous fighter. He has been at the world stage so I will have to be at the top of my game.
“It’s a massive step up for me. A lot of people see this as a 50/50 fight. It’s good for me because I know it’s a massive step up and I know what I need to do.”
“We’ve been at the same gym together over the years with Anthony Yarde as well so there were a lot of good fighters there.
“At the end of the day it’s business and you have to fight your friends to get where you need to get to.
“We have respect for each other before the fight and will have respect for each other after the fight, there’s no question about that.”
One of Britain’s brightest prospects, Azim has come through a gruelling camp unscathed and is ready to show the world what he is capable of.
It will hopefully be the first headliner of a long and successful career, but the Slough slugger is far from daunted by his new-found main event status having fought on the undercard for the Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr rematch in Manchester last year.
“It’s probably the best camp I’ve ever had,” insisted Azim, who teased a secret weapon he wants to keep close to his chest for now.
“I’ve changed a lot of stuff in this camp and I’m feeling really good.
“I’m ready to put a performance on. I can’t tell you what I’ve changed, it’s confidential but you’ll see on fight night what I mean by that.
“It’s nothing new to me because I fought in front of 20,000 people on the undercard for the Liam Smith and Eubank fight.
“It’s something new to me because I’m in a bigger fight and all the eyes are on me, but I’m used to it because of the experience I’ve got.”
