Former trainer to Joe Joyce, Abel Sanchez believes Chisora fight will be a slugfest
Award-winning trainer Abel Sanchez once trained ‘The Juggernaut’ Joe Joyce from 2018 to 2019.
The Mexican-American is based at Big Bear Lake, a small city in California’s San Bernardino Mountains, two hours from Los Angeles. The high-altitude and remote setting makes it the perfect place for a training camp.
Sanchez’s gym, The Summit, is based here and has been used by Joyce in the past, as well as Gennady Golovkin, Murat Gassiev, Sullivan Barrera, Murat Gassiev, Alfredo Angulo and Oscar De La Hoya.
The 69-year-old spoke exclusively to BBN about his former student’s next fight, this Saturday, July 27, against Derek Chisora.
How do you see Joe Joyce vs Derek Chisora going?
“Toe to toe slugfest. Chisora is limited and getting old, Joe Joyce has stopped learning, maybe by his own choosing or just nobody willing to improve him Toughness and grit don’t last forever.”
Do you think Joe can get back to the No.1 mandatory position he once held in 2023?
“It will be difficult, but all is possible; however, he must remain active and get wins quickly.”
How do you think he will fare against the likes of Usyk, Fury, Joshua?
“Joe Joyce is behind in development, he still has time if he commits to add to his game, but those guys right now are ahead of him, he would not be competitive.”
