Oleksandr Usyk taunts Tyson Fury with latest message
Incredible Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk has spoken out after his undisputed fight with Tyson Fury was postponed recently with a cryptic message aimed at his future foe.
The original date for this historic undisputed match, and the first in 25 years since Lennox Lewis last held all of the major titles, was set for February 17.
A cut late in sparring sustained by Fury put the brakes on the contest, however, which has quickly been rearranged for May 18 to allow enough time for Tyson’s injury to heal.
Many are worried that Fury might never get back in the ring given what has happened in the past when he has delayed due to injury, and the Croatian sparring partner who inflicted the cut has had to deny it was an elbow that did the damage.
Fury hasn’t had the best time of late – his last fight in October 2023 was a hard-fought points win against tricky MMA star Francis Ngannou, who was making his professional boxing debut and even managed to knock down the long-reining heavyweight champion, much to the shock of spectators who expected an easy night’s work for the British behemoth.
Now, the man on the receiving end of this bad news has spoken out. Ukrainian southpaw Usyk is a famously cool and calm character, eccentric, entertaining and likeable, and the former undisputed cruiserweight champion currently holds the WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO titles.
Speaking to Boxing News, he sent a simple yet strange message straight down the camera lens to his nemesis, “Don’t be afraid. I will not leave you alone, my friend.”
The eccentric European then explained, “I’m not judging anyone, but the thing is we have to treat this more seriously, this is very important and we have to be cautious.”
He then listed all the personal sacrifices he has made to prepare for Fury, including missing the birth of his daughter.
All eyes are now fixed on May 18 when a a new undisputed heavyweight champion – the first this century – will hopefully be crowned… finally!
