Yamileth Mercado defeats Kudakwashe Chiwandire
World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Yamileth Mercado retained her WBC belt, defeating Interim champion Kudakwashe Chiwandire, at the Manuel Bernardo Aguirre gym, by unanimous decision, in the fifth defense of her Green and Gold Laurels.
The fight began with both warily studying each other, Chiwandire stood in the center of the ring, however, she could not land with power. For the second round “Yeimi” took the initiative, but Chiwandire put up a good defense.
By mid fight fight, Yamileth was landing the most consistently edging a slight advantage, as announced by the Judges, through the WBC open scoring system.
Kudakwashe, despite trailing on the cards, never stopped looking for the win by attacking more aggressively, with a lot of power, but at the cost of a weaker defense, allowing Mercado to pick her off.
“I am very happy to return home, it was a very complicated fight, I followed my strategy from start to finish. The belt stays at home, great things are coming for me. If I have to go up or down in division I will I will do it, I still have a long way to go, I am barely 25 years old.”Yamileth Mercado enthused after the fight.
With this victory, “Yeimi” reinforces herself as the absolute super bantamweight champion of the WBC and as one of the longest reigning, since she has held her crown since 2019.

This morning the super bantamweight world champion connected via zoom with the specialized press in the traditional “Martes de Cafe” to talk about the great victory she had over interim monarch Kudakwashe Chiwandire whom she defeated by unanimous decision.
Yamileth, who fought ar her Home in Chihuahua, was delighted with her hard fought victory, but above all with being able to fulfill this commitment. She confessed that the fight with Chiwandire was not easy, but that she had prepared well for that.
She thanked everyone who made it possible for this fifth to take place at her home, Chihuahua, her team, the WBC, her promoter, family, but especially all the people who packed the municipal gym to witness this great fight.
Regarding future plans, Yamileth was clear in saying that she feels very comfortable at super bantamweight; However, for this fight she put on a few pounds below the division which she showed that she, without problems, could fight as bantamweight.
At this point, Yamileth announced that her managers are already thinking about a possible fight in that division and perhaps, she will later face the monarch Yulihahn Luna.
Regarding a possible rematch with Amanda Serrano in the Featherweight division, Yamileth did not rule out the possibility; However, and listening to her body, she was clear in saying that she would give away many advantages by going up to that division.
For now, Yamileth will take a well-deserved rest, to return to training as soon as possible and prepare her next challenge.
