Maredudd Thomas: The belt is coming back to Wales!
Maredudd Thomas will have all of Wales behind him when he meets Sahir Iqbal for the WBC World Youth welterweight title on Wednesday's huge #MTKFightNight – and he has vowed that the belt will be going home with him to Cardiff.
Unbeaten fighters will collide when Thomas (11-0, 2 KOs) faces Iqbal (7-0, 1 KO) at Production Park Studios in Wakefield, live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and worldwide on IFL TV.
It is set to be the biggest fight so far in the respective careers of both men, but Thomas is extremely confident that he'll be the one with his hand raised.
Thomas said: "Winning this title will get my name out there in the welterweight division, and I'd like to be able to keep challenging for titles after this.
"Getting these titles is what boxers work so hard for, and it's given me more motivation than ever to bring this belt back home to Cardiff.
"Training has been different for this fight due to the lockdown, but I like using the outdoors as my gym. No matter what I've found a way to train.
"I come from a family with four older brothers who are into boxing and have been able to take me on the pads and keep me focused on the challenge I have in front of me."
Thomas vs. Iqbal is part of a huge show on Wednesday, which is headlined by Jono Carroll vs. Maxi Hughes and also features Sean McComb going up against Siar Ozgul, Craig MacIntyre taking on Ishmael Ellis, and Pierce O’Leary facing Jacob Quinn.
It kicks off a brilliant run of #MTKFightNight events throughout the summer, with the likes of Lewis Crocker, Lee McGregor, Gary Cully, Akeem Ennis Brown, Dan Azeez and more all in action over the coming months.
