MTK move to Miami
MTK Global continues its expansion in the United States with exciting launch of the brand-new MTK Miami gym.
Miami has been synonymous with boxing for decades, with the famous Fifth Street Gym known as one of the most celebrated boxing gyms in history.
Sporting icon Muhammad Ali is just one of the superstars that trained at Fifth Street, before the gym was eventually bought by highly-respected boxing figure Walter Alvarez.
Alvarez has been involved in the sport for nearly 50 years, and he will now bring his unparalleled knowledge and experienced to oversee the MTK Miami gym.
It is the latest big move for MTK Global during their continued expansion into the US, following the recent signing of IBF super-featherweight champion JoJo Diaz, plus fellow American-based talents Lorenzo Simpson and Jonathan Lopez.
Speaking on the announcement, Alvarez said:"I'm super excited. MTK Global is one of the leaders in the boxing world and once we pass the health crisis our planet is undergoing, the horizons will open wider than ever.
"I am certain that between us two we will develop new and exciting new boxers, especially Latin Americans, that will reach the top in no time.
"We have created a small but chic boxing facility to develop boxing prospects that will soon be proudly representing our name. Once we physically outgrow our facility we have the ability and the space to expand.
"Miami has always been the mecca for training super champions in the USA. Muhammad Ali opened the era training in the iconic Fifth Street Gym and dozens of champions followed. Arguello, Rodriguez, Duran, Pryor, Ellis, Paret, Lora, just to name a few.
"We have almost a grassroots movement. Our main target will be up and coming no-miss young fighters that in no time will become stars in the sport.
"These kids may derive from being Olympic representatives of their mainly Latin countries and will all be blue chippers and hard workers. We will also have a number of more experienced pro fighters looking for a world title opportunity.
"Our ambition is to create Latin rooted champions while giving a shot to every kid that wants to succeed. We aspire to teach discipline, dedication, and a love for the sport. We will not turn down any kid that wants to create a name for himself but our main focus will be to develop champions in a relative short time."
MTK Global Chief Strategy Officer Paul Gibson added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Walter in this exciting new venture in Miami.
“South Florida is a renowned boxing hotspot and the main gateway into the US for many Latino fighters. That part of the world churns out elite boxing talent year after year so it is fantastic to be well placed to take a look and help develop future world champions.
“Walter’s long and distinguished resume in boxing speaks for itself and I can’t think of a better man to have on the ground representing MTK in Miami.”
The launch of MTK Miami means MTK Global has now expanded to 19 locations worldwide, following the unveiling of MTK Lake Distrct, MTK Munich, MTK Denmark (based in Aarhus) and MTK Costa Brava earlier this year.
They join strongholds in Osaka, Japan; Marbella and Tenerife, Spain; London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Scotland, United Kingdom; Johannesburg, South Africa; Santa Catarina, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Tucson, Arizona, USA and Dubai, UAE.
