Boxing star Iain Weaver says he still believes he can capture a world title despite having to overcome numerous hurdles since turning pro.
The former Commonwealth gold medal winner from Ferndown mixed with some of the sports biggest names during his time in the unpaid ranks, but despite his sublime talents Weaver has struggled to secure regular fights since making the move to the pro ranks back in 2013.
After enduring nearly two years of inactivity due to injuries and cancelled fights Weaver returned from the wilderness in May to produce a stunning second round stoppage victory over teak tough Irishman Marty Kayes on the BDF sanctioned Queensbury professional boxing league, and after looking razor sharp on his return Weaver is now ready to push forward.
“It’s fair to say since turning professional things haven’t really got going for me, but I’m in a good place now and I’m ready to make my mark," said Weaver.
“It’s been hard to stay motivated during the tough times and if it wasn’t for the support from my girlfriend and family I might have turned my back on the sport.”
Weaver’s quest to reignite his career continues on Saturday July 1st when he returns to the Queensbury professional boxing league to face Irelands Michael Kelly at the famous Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey.
“I’m feeling great after coming off such a good performance against Kayes and I’m eager to now get regular fights and start looking at challenging for titles," continued Weaver.
“I Know Kelly has a 50/50 record and will be coming over to try and cause the upset, but I’ve had world class sparring in preparation for this and I’m going to be more than ready come fight night”
“Even though I’ve been inactive competitively I’ve been training hard and been sparring all over the world learning all the time, and I genuinely believe I can mix it with the very best and ultimately capture a world title.
Weaver’s showdown against Kelly will feature on the Queensbury professional boxing league’s All Fired Up promotion on Saturday July 1st at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, and for ticket information contact the box office on 0203 751 8599.
