Ilunga Makabu Vs Thabiso Mchunu in January 2022
'Junior' to defend green and gold title to 'The Rock'
Congolese Ilunga Makabu (28-2, 25KOs) will defend his World Boxing Council cruiserweight belt against mandatory challenger, South African Thabiso Mchunu (23-5, 13KOs) on January 29 at the W.D. Packard Music Hall, in Ohio, United States.
“This will be an action-packed clash for the World Boxing Council championship and with a great fight on the horizon for the winner,” said Don King, promoter of the event, in a press release.
Thabiso Mchunu vows he’s ready to challenge Makabu for the Cruiserweight belt, since the WBC ordered in its 59th convention that the winner of the fight, will face the super-middleweight champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, probably in May.
WBC cruiserweight champion since January 2020, Ilunga Makabu, 34, has a professional record of 28 wins, with 25 knockouts and 2 losses, while challenger Thabiso Mchunu, 33, has a record of 23 wins, with 13 knockouts and 5 losses.
Since his last defeat to Briton Tony Bellew in 2016, Makabu has been on a ruthless nine-fight winning streak with seven knockouts.
Mchunu has put four victories together since his last defeat in 2019, and was a recent WBC Silver champion. He won that ranking title against top prospect Evgeny Tishchenko in his last fight in March 2021. He also holds a win over Golden Contract champion Ricards Bolotniks.
