Noel Mikaelian plans to turn silver into gold
World Boxing Council No.2 cruiserweight and reigning WBC Silver Champion Noel Mikaelian(26-2, 11KO) wants to turn silver into into pure gold.
Noel, who is at WBC Convention 60 in Acapulco, as is champion Illunga Makabu (29-2, 25KO), said: “Just the two defeats, but they were my best fights. Very controversial defeats.”
The 32-year-old German lost to two elite cruisers in Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and Mairis Briedis, both on points over 12 rounds. The Armenian-born fighter has since won three on the spin, picking up two prestigious WBC belts in the process.
He continued to say, “Makabu is the champion so I’m chasing after him. There is no secret to it. You have to put the work in, you have to sacrifice, be disciplined and be patient too.
“They say I’m a defensive fighter, but I’m also a hard puncher. I never look for the knockout. The most important thing is to win.”
The Covid pandemic has slowed everything down, resulting in just three bouts in the last four years for Noel.
He added, “Many say it’s harder to keep the title than to win it, because hungry guys are coming up and you are already satisfied.
“So you are the one being chased. While before, you were the hunter. I’m now in my physical prime and give myself five years to accomplish everything.”
