WBC heavyweight status update
Following the announcement of Tyson Fury's official retirement from boxing, the WBC have been forced to release an update on the status of their WBC World heavyweight title.
With 'The Gypsy King' formally retiring, the WBC bauble should automatically become vacant, but many were left miffed when this wasn't immediately affirmed.
The WBC released this short statement on August 15 to clarify the current situation:
"The World Boxing Council has been in communications with Tyson Fury and his promoters regarding his status as WBC heavyweight champion. The WBC has set Friday, August 26th as the final day to receive official written confirmation from them. No further comments will be made by our organization until then."
So, despite walking away from the sport, Tyson Fury hasn't yet given up his WBC title and has another 10 days to decide what to do with the prestigious green and gold belt.
However, it has been confirmed that he has relinquished The Ring Magazine title, which will now be on the line in this weekend's rematch between WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and challenger Anthony Joshua.
