Gary Russell Jr. will face Mark Magsayo in January
American 'Mr.' Gary Russell Jr. (31-1, 18 KOs) will make the mandatory defence of his World Boxing Council featherweight title against Filipino prospect Mark 'Magnifico' Magsayo (23-0, 16 KOs) in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event on January 22nd at the Borgota Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The event is set to be broadcast on Showtime.
Russell, 33, has defended his WBC belt five times since he defeated Mexico’s Jhonny González to win the green and gold belt back in March 2015.
26-year-old Magsayo, trained by Freddie Roach, is the number two contender for the WBC and is coming off a major win by defeating Mexican Julio Ceja.
The World Boxing Council chose him, this week, as their 'Prospect of the Year 2021'.
'The Real Deal' Evander Holyfield's son, undefeated super-welterweight Evan Holyfield (8-0, 6KOs) is scheduled to appear on the undercard.
Mongolian 'King Tut' Tugstsogt Nyambayar (12-2, 9KOs) makes his first appearance since defeat to Chris Colbert for the interim WBA World super-featherweight title in July. He also challenged the headlining defending champion, Russell Jr., back in February 2020, which ended in a unanimous decision defeat. He faces California's Vic Pasillas (16-1, 9KOs) over 10-rounds, who is also looking to bounce back from a prior defeat.
Undefeated super-welterweight 'Lightning' LeShawn Rodriguez (12-0, 9KOs), from New York, heads back to the ring for the first time over two years.
