WBC mourns the passing of champion Panya Pradabsri’s father
The sad news broke early in the New Year of untimely death of WBC minimumweight champion Panya Pradabsri (37-1, 23KOs) father.
The World Boxing Council released the following statement on January 4:
"The WBC mourns the passing of the father of our beloved straw-weight champion, Panya Pradabsri.
Mr. Pradabsri was a key player in his son’s career, propelling him to the world crown on November 27, 2020, when he defeated compatriot Wanheng Menayothin.
We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Panya Pradabsri at this difficult and sad time.
May he rest in eternal peace."
Pradabsri, 30 from Bangkok, is due to face former champion Chayaphon Moonsri (55-1, 19KOs), also known as Wanheng Menayothin Kaiyanghada, on January 25 in a highly-anticipated rematch.
The pair first met in November 2020, with challenger Pradabsri inflicting the first defeat on the reigning champion's record and relieving him of his green and gold title that he had owned for six years.
Also known as Petchmanee CP Freshmart, this will be Pradabsri's second defence as champion. 36-year-old Moonsri completed 12 successful defences during his dominant reign.
