WBC update their heavyweight world title status
Dillian Whyte could finally get his WBC World title shot against Tyson Fury, the WBC have ruled.
The World Boxing Council have instructed camps of both fighters to negotiate a contest during the next 30 days. If a deal can’t be made within this term, then the fight will go to purse bids.
On December 7, the World Boxing Council ruled: The WBC hereby orders the start of the free negotiations period pursuant to the WBC Rules & Regulations for the mandatory bout between WBC World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury and Mandatory Challenger and WBC Interim World Champion Dillian Whyte.
Whyte has waited patiently for his world title shot with his first intentions at fighting for the prize going back to Deontay Wilder’s reign as champion. His hopes were temporarily thwarted in the summer of 2020 when he was stopped by Alexander Povetkin but a rematch win against the veteran Russian placed Whyte’s plans back on track.
Fury, who became champion by defeating Wilder in February last year, has dismissed the threat of Whyte on several occasions preferring to test himself against the likes of Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua. Following the WBC’s instructions, it looks like the second defence of his title will come against the Brixton 'Body Snatcher'.
When speaking to Behind the Gloves, 'The Gypsy King stated, "How many days has he been my mandatory? One. So welcome to the big GK world.
"I've known Dillian a long time, we go back a long way and he's improved a lot over the last few years, but the outcome will always be the same, I'll knock him out if that fight happens."
