Forget Pay-Per-View productions or Wembley Stadium shows – the highlight of the UK boxing calendar is VIP Promotions’ ‘Jolly Boys’ show.
JOLLY BOYS BOXING 2017 SHOWS HERE
This annual December event has been a regular social fixture for British boxing’s ‘big guns’ since 1996, and this year sees an exciting development with promoter Steve Wood hosting the event in Liverpool, as well as the usual Manchester affair.
Not for the faint-hearted, ‘Jolly Boys’ combines quality boxing alongside a comedian, luxury Xmas dinner, and VIP dancing girls! And with the Manchester version (December 20, Lancashire County Cricket Club) sold out as usual, Wood is hoping ‘Scouse Jolly Boys’ will prove just as popular with Liverpool fight fans.
Topping the event, at Liverpool’s Devonshire House Hotel on December 6, will be unbeaten local welterweight Tom Farrell taking on Halifax’s Luke Keleher. Farrell, 5-0, gets his first six-rounder against Keleher, with the Yorkshireman hoping for a third victory in what will also be his sixth outing. Also appearing will be Skelmersdale’s Steve Brogan, and Liverpudlians Louis Cuddy and Ryan Mulcahy.
“Jolly Boys is legendary,” explained Wood, "a great night’s entertainment. We’ve built the show up over the years and it’s so popular that I get people asking me about it months in advance! We’re at the stage where we’ve already sold out a 1000 capacity venue for the Manchester show and it just gets bigger each year. We’ve got a regular crowd coming now, including the likes of Ricky Hatton, and it sells on its reputation alone.
“I’ve had lots of people asking me to do a Jolly Boys in Liverpool, so we’re trying it this year. Hopefully it will become just as popular, and we’re expecting lots of the Liverpool fighters along. We’re following the same format by starting small, and will build into a regular future event in the Liverpool boxing calendar. It’s going to be a terrific night and value for money at £60 per head. Tables of 12 are £720 and it’s great for companies looking for an Xmas party.
“In terms of the boxing, I’m looking forward to seeing Tom Farrell in action. I’ve been impressed with him so far, but he’s in with a kid with similar experience who is coming to win, which will make for an exciting, competitive fight. Louis Cuddy is returning from injury and always entertaining to watch. Steve Brogan and Ryan [Mulcahy] are top prospects; Steve will box for titles in 2016, and Ryan was sensational on his debut in September.”
