Astrolabio wins WBC eliminator
Philippine Vincent Astrolabio (19-4, 14 KOs) defeated Thai contender Nawaphon Kaikanha (58-3-1, 48 KOs) in a WBC elimination bout.
It was at Rachadadaphisek Bazaar in Bangkok, Thailand. The winner will now fight the current WBC bantamweight champion, Alexandro Santiago.
The fight began with Astrolabio putting pressure on the Thai fighter and controlling the center of the ring, keeping Kaikanha languishing on the ropes.
Astrolabio started landing some hard shots and looked comfortable.
Kaikhana’s team told him that he should fight from a distance and use his speed more.
Kaikanha found his rhythm mid-fight and began exchanging with his Filipino opponent, putting together and. pulling off plus piling on successful counterattacks.
In round 11, Astrolabio seemed to be making up ground, although at that time the Thai looked better.
Astrolabio dredged up a great combination and ended up sending Kaikanha to the canvas at 1:30 of that round.
The Thai seemed to beat the count, but his legs were shaking. Astrolabio then unleashed a series of hard and hurtful left hooks and Referee Yuji Fukuchi decided to stop the fight at 1:09 in Round 11.
