Young prospect Rhys Edwards wants to work his way up to world title glory
Former amateur star Rhys Edwards (5-0) believes he can go all the way to world level as he prepares to go six unbeaten as part of MTK Global's incredible Welsh card on Saturday night at the Vale Sports Arena, topped by Jay Harris's European title bid against world title challenger Angel Moreno, lve on iFL TVand ESPN+.
The 19-year-old looked like cementing his place as one of the most exciting prospects in the country after a dazzling performance in his last outing again Reynaldo Cajina just four weeks ago.
The Tonypandy talent enjoyed a stellar amateur career picking up five Welsh and two British Championships before winning a Bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Now a professional under the guidance of coach Gary Lockett and London-based Promoter Mo Prior, he looks set to continue his rise to the top against Rafael Castillo (14-59-5) this weekend in Wales over four super-featherweight rounds.
And the young prospect believes he can go all the with the team around him.
“I really do think I can eventually get to world level but I know these things take time,” he said.
“I had really good experience as an amateur boxing internationally and I want to do it the right way.
“Go through all the right targets like a Welsh title, then a Commonwealth then to British, European and eventually World level.
“I have a great time around me, I can't thank Gary enough for helping me out in the gym every day I am learning so much with him it's really been class.
“You have to change your style when you come into the pro game, its a different pace. You have to look for openings a bit more, pick your shots and stuff.
“I can't wait for fight night, I want to put on another performance for the fans. If you're coming expect another calm and mature performance. I really want to show everyone more of my skills and even more of my footwork!”
The 11-fight televised card also includes Kieran Gething (8-2-4) in a maiden defence of his Welsh Area super-lightweight title against Craig Woodruff (7-4). There's even more title action as Craig Evans (19-2-2) and Stephen Ormond (27-5) clash for the WBO European lightweight title.
