Joe McGrail defeated Alexandru Ionita on points
It was two wins within two weeks for Liverpool's Joe McGrail (5-0, 2KO) on Sunday, July 17.
The talented 19-year-old defeated tough Romanian Alexandru Ionita (7-13-1, 5KO), who had more knockouts on his record than McGrail had fights entering into the contest.
Merseysider McGrail won the fight 60-54, winning every round of his first ever six-round professional contest.
It was only two weeks ago on July 2nd when Joe won his last fight at the Metrodome in Barnsley, defeating another experienced Romanian in Stefan Nicolae (3-36-2, 1KO). The talented prospect has won two of his fve fights by knockout and his trio of points wins have all been shutouts, so he is yet to lose a single round in the pro ranks.
Post-fight, McGrail was equally pleased and displeased with his performance, stating: “I’m happy to get the six rounds in, it’s the longest fight I’ve ever had in my career.
“My shot selection and punch picking was a lot better than my last fight, and so it was a better performance, in that way, but I took too many shots.”
Promoter Phil Jeffries delivered a belter of a show for his 10th Summer Rumble on Sunday in Sunderland, headlined by the Nothern Area lightweight match between Jordan Ellison and Adam Cope.
Former Northern Area super-lightweight champion Jordan Ellison had a chance to win the belt in another weight division but was beaten on points by unbeaten Hartlepool prospect Adam Cope (5-0). Referee Ron Kearney scored the Northern Area lightweight championship contest 98-93 to the 26-year-old Cope to lift his first ever professional title.
