Boma Brown all set for TV debut
Everton Red Triangle gym’s unbeaten heavyweight Boma Brown (1-0) is all ready for his second pro fight this Saturday night, July 29, at the Telford International Centre, live on TNT Sports.
Londoner “Bomber” Brown will appear on the undercard of the Queensberry Promotions event headlined by Liam Davies vs Jason Cunningham.
The 27-year-old from Watford kicked off his pro career last November with a shutout points win over four rounds on a dinner show in London, after signing contracts with Frank Warren in August 2022. It was a humble beginning to his pro life, but now he’s set to have fight number two in front of around 4,000 live spectators, broadcast on TNT Sports, formerly BT Sport.
“I’m relishing that to be fair,” he said about the jump up in stages. “I’m looking forward to it being televised and being on the big scale with the bright lights, so I’m looking forward to that, because I wanna be in that environment, that’s where I see myself going in the future.”
“Bomber” Brown will face Jake Darnell (2-20) over four rounds at heavyweight. The journeyman from Blackpool, known as “Nellie”, picked up a win just two months ago against an undefeated heavyweight, knocked down a 4-0 opponent recently, and hasn’t been stopped in his last 10 fights.
The heavyweight prospect commented on his next bout, “I’m just focused solely on myself, I don’t take anybody lightly, if you overlook someone then you could come unstuck.”
Brown’s preparation couldn’t have been better with plenty of rounds sparring with some very notable names, he revealed, “It’s been good, done loads of rounds of sparring with Kash Ali for a lot of this camp and did a few rounds with Dillian Whyte as well.”
He added, “He [Whyte] was decent, nice guy, he’s a good fighter and you can see why he’s one of the top 10 heavyweights in the world right now; good defensively and he can bang as well!”
The university graduate shared his enthusiasm to be back under the bright lights to show off the improvements he has made since his pro bow eight months ago, “For my pro debut, I think I had only been in the gym for 10 weeks or so. I joined in September and boxed in November so not long, about eight weeks, so this time I’ve had more time in the gym, more rounds of sparring, and time to acclimatise more to the training.
“So going into this fight, I’m just supremely confident!”
Despite growing up in North London and studying in Coventry, Boma is now settled in Liverpool where he trains at the Everton Red Triangle gym with teammates Nick Ball, currently ranked No.2 in the world at featherweight; and Olympian Peter McGrail.
There’s six active pros all working together under the watchful eye of head coach, Paul Stevenson. Five of those operate between bantam and featherweight, so Boma is the only big guy in the gym, aside from the amateurs there.
“It’s good to be around those guys because they work at such an intense pace,” the 6’ 5” heavyweight said. “I have to try and keep up with them, but I like it like that.
“Paul [Stevenson] is a phenomenal coach, him and Anthony [Humphreys], they help us out all the time.”
Brown only started boxing aged 19 but was crowned Midlands Area champion on three occasions during his short amateur career and counted Commonwealth Games gold medallist Delicious Orie as his teammate and sparring partner.
He explained how he ended up 200 miles southwest from his home, “I started off in London, then started boxing when I went to uni in Coventry and just picked it up there. And then I decided to make the trip to Birmingham to join an amateur club, and I was down there at the Jewelry Quarter amateur club for best part of four or five years.
“In the process of that I boxed against my current coach now – Paul Stevenson – one of his lads in the amateurs and from there we just kept in contact, and the start of last year I was unsure what I wanted to do in terms of boxing, so I spoke to Paul and he said come to the gym and see how you find it, and from there I loved it straightaway.”
Born and bred in Wembley, he was fortunate enough to make his pro bow in Islington, on a Frank Warren promoted show, just 10 miles from where he grew up.
He reflected back, “It was ok, but I would have preferred the stoppage and I think I definitely should have got it, but it was learning experience for sure.
“Now I feel like in the time that I’ve had in the gym since, I’ve improved so much as a fighter that on Saturday night I should be very, very good.”
Boma Brown vs Jake Darnell four-round fight will open the show on Saturday.
