WBC Silver title challenge drawing close for Picasso and Ngebinyana
On Saturday, July 15 in Mexico City, WBC #3 Alan ‘Rey David’ Picasso (24-0-1, 13KO) will fight South African southpaw Sabelo Ngebinyana (15-6-1, 11KO) in a bout presented by Golden Boy in association with Zanfer Promotions, with the coveted WBC Silver super-bantamweight title at stake.
The Golden Boy Fight Night: Mexico Edition event will be broadcast on Azteca TV in Mexico and worldwide on DAZN. Picasso is the overwhelming favourite to win but for more betting odds and top betting sites comparison visit MansionBet UK.
22-year-old unbeaten Mexican, David 'Rey' Picasso, has risen through the ranks during the last three years, having defeated notable rivals: Víctor Proa, Alexander Mejía, Edixon Pérez, Luis Millán and Kevin Villanueva.
His inspiration is the great Julio Cesar Chavez, who he has been fortunate to meet on many occasions, even partnering together on advertising campaigns.
Picasso is expected to win but the 30-year-old South African has upset fighters on the road before. In April 2022, he defeated favoured Brit Ashley Sexton in London with a surprise fifth-round TKO to win the vacant IBF International bantamweight belt. The heavy-handed southpaw has 11 knockouts from 15 victories, so upcoming prospect Picasso will need to have his wits about about for the full 10 rounds.
He has faced some of the strongest super bantamweights of his country. He has the experience, stamina, heart and chin to provide Picasso with a tough challenge.
“I am happy for the opportunity. Thank you Fernando Beltrán, Oscar De La Hoya and DAZN for placing their trust in me,” commented Cape Town's Ngebinyana. “After July 15, no one will be able to hide that I am the strongest super bantamweight in Mexico, and I will go for the world title. Nery, Inoue and Fulton should take care of themselves, because Picasso is in the division.
“It will be my first time in Mexico and the only thing I think about is that I will be the No. 2 mandatory of the World Boxing Council once again. I respect David a lot, he is a great boxer, complicated and knows how to work round by round, but I am not going to leave anything to the judges.
“I don’t know if they are underestimating me, but I come to do my job. I worked very hard and although I have defeats in my record, this will be my greatest victory. Thank Zanfer and Golden Boy for the opportunity, I will not let them down.”
Picasso has won titles with the World Boxing Council before, collecting WBC Youth Intercontinental super-bantam and featherweight titles in fights 13 and 14, respectively. In April 2022, he won the NABF super-bantamweight title and has stopped his last six opponents in a row.
With his lofty WBC world ranking, the youngster will be looking to challenge the world champion, Stephen Fulton, soon, but the American must first defend his WBC and WBO world super-bantamweight straps to Japanese monster Naoya Inoue later this month in Japan. The only other champion in the 122-pound division ais WBA and IBF holder Marlon Tapales.
However, the Mexican must first get through the tough test that is Sabelo Ngebinyana in assignment number 26.
Undercard
At featherweight Rafael Espinoza will face Ally Mwerangi in a 10-round bout.
In super middleweight, Aaron Silva will face Hassam Valenzuela scheduled for 8 rounds.

At super lightweight, Johnny Canas will face Hugo Vega over four rounds.
The World Boxing Council is proud to be part of this card, which marks the return of high-quality boxing to Mexico City, with two world ranked boxers fighting for the prestigious Silver title.
The WBC has sought for some time the return of the big cards to Mexico City and this is the beginning of promising battles that we will see in the near future.
The card will be broadcast internationally by DAZN and throughout Mexico and part of Latin America by TV AZTECA.
