Background
The unbeaten ‘Gypsy King’, based in Morecambe, has held the lineal heavyweight title since November 28, 2015, the night he ended the decade-long championship run of Wladimir Klitschko. Following over two years of inactivity, he returned to action in June 2018, inspiring millions with a comeback that saw him fighting for the world title within six months of his June 2018 comeback victory over Sefer Seferi in Manchester. The only blemish on his record – a disputed December 2018 draw against Wilder – was avenged with stoppage wins over the American star in February 2020 and October 2021.
Fury intends to face unified champ Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship in the first part of 2023. After negotiations with Anthony Joshua for a December dust-up fell apart, Fury chose Chisora for his next fight on UK soil, which follows on from his April knockout of mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in front of 94,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
Promoted by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, in association with Top Rank, this will be the third meeting between Fury and Chisora. They first met in July 2011 with the British and Commonwealth titles at stake, and Fury prevailed by unanimous decision.
In between Fury fights, Chisora challenged for the WBC title and gave a good account of himself against Vitali Klitschko in Munich, before entering into a grudge match at West Ham United’s Upton Park against another British rival in David Haye.
He rebuilt from those setbacks by winning the WBO International, European and WBA International titles in a five-fight winning streak, setting up a return fight with Fury that took place at London’s
ExCel Arena in November 2014.
In recent years, Chisora has been involved in two close encounters with Dillian Whyte and one with Usyk, while defeating Carlos Takam, Artur Szpilka and David Price. Last year, he lost a pair of tight affairs with Joseph Parker. His last fight was an exciting points win over former world title challenger Kubrat Pulev in July, so he comes into the hardest fight of his career off the back of a decent victory. But he’s coming up against a man who has brushed him aside twice before.
Undercard Highlights
In what will be a world heavyweight title double-header, WBA world champion Daniel Dubois will make a first defence of his belt against South African southpaw Kevin Lerena.
The 25-year-old Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs) seized his world title belt in June when he travelled to Miami and demolished previous holder Trevor Bryan, inflicting the first defeat on the American via a fourth-round stoppage.
Lerena (28-1, 14 KOs), 30, is a recent addition to the heavyweight ranks, having established himself as the IBO world cruiserweight champion, making six defences of the title. At heavyweight, he has recorded victories over Patrick Ferguson, Bogdan Dinu and Mariusz Wach, winning the WBA and IBO Intercontinental titles in the process.
Quotes
Promoter Frank Warren: “I am thrilled to be delivering a Tyson Fury world title defence in front of the British fans in London. Tyson clearly conquered America across his trilogy with Deontay Wilder and there is also huge demand to stage his fights from sites across the world.
“Tyson wanted to fight in his home country again this year following his special night at Wembley Stadium in April. This brings us to the magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a match against an old rival in Derek Chisora.
“Derek, also a big favourite with British fans, has reinvented himself in recent years and Tyson has long stated his wish to fight him for a third time.
“Tyson can’t afford any slip-up in this fight as he has the much-publicised undisputed match-up with Usyk in the New Year which we’re really looking forward to.
“Whenever Tyson Fury fights, it is a major event, and I expect him to once again put on a spectacular show for the fans,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “There are talks about what’s next for Tyson, but the first order of business is a battle against an extraordinarily tough fighter in Derek Chisora.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor:“Firstly, it’s not a fight I’m overly interested in watching, but given the choice of Fury fighting in December or not all, which would you rather? So, I don’t begrudge him for choosing this fight at all. Having beaten Chisora twice already, completely dominating him in their last bout, I don’t believe Tyson could lose to Chisora, no matter what he brings to the table in the twilight of his career. I was a little concerned when Fury posted something about Isaac Lowe training him for his next fight, but I believe SugarHill is back in Morecombe again, so that’s a relief! It’s also a bit worrying listening to all the public things he’s been saying, I’, seeing a lot of fans turning off him because of all his public rants, which seem to occur every other day. I hope his mind is fully focused on the job and not elsewhere on the next fight with Usyk or Joyce, or whoever it may be. If SugarHill is guiding him, then I’m sure it’ll be completely business and that he’ll get another one-sided victory over Chisora to complete two successful trilogies. If Tyson wins, then there’s little chance it will be over the distance. Chisora can take a shot but a sustained beatdown will catch up with him eventually. If Fury dominates in this fight like he did in their 2014 rematch, where Chisora was pulled out after the 10th round, then I expect this trilogy to be ended early, between rounds 7-12.”
