Tyson Fury fight announcement made
WBC World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (31-0-1, 22KOs) has had his next fight date announced as March 26.
Previously, 'The Gypsy King', born in Wythenshawe, has expressed his desire to fight at Manchester United's Old Trafford before he retires as a boxer.
His last five bouts have been in America, where he has received a far better reception than in the UK.
Promoter Frank Warren revealed the following information below:
Fight Date:
Saturday, March 26
Venue:
Fury has fought his last five fights in the States, where he has made Las Vegas his boxing home. Four of those five fights were in Vegas – two at the T-Mobile Arena and two at the MGM Grand.
The Mancunian has previously wished to fight at Old Trafford at least once in his boxing career, so the home of Manchester United FC could also be a possible venue.
Opponent:
His WBC mandatory opponent is Dillian Whyte, but complicated arbitrations, court rullings and failed negotiations have seen any real progress stalled.
So, Bob Arum has named Andy Ruiz Jr. and Robert Helenius as the frontrunners to face Fury for his Lineal title, with the World Boxing Council promising he won't have to put up his WBC belt while the mandatory situation works itself out.
Frank Warren:
Speaking to iFL TV, Warren said: “The WBC determines what the split is, which I always felt, will be 80/20. Fury wants to fight by the end of March.
“But whatever happens, he’ll fight on the 26th of March. That’s what the objective is. The fact of the matter is, that’s when he wants to fight. That’s what the splits are; that’s what they’ve ordered.
“The contracts that he’s [Whyte] lodged for his last three fights, the last one was for 300 grand, and the one prior to that was approximately 500 grand.
“Tyson’s last fight was $20 million. It would be nothing other than an 80/20 split, and really if you look at the monies that they earned for their last fight, it shouldn’t even be 80/20.
“The objective is for Tyson to be out on that date and defending his [WBC] title against Dillian Whyte or something else if it’s there, but he wants to fight at the end of March, and that’s where we’re at.”
