Tyson Fury: “[Mental health] doesn’t care who you are. I just do one day at a time.”
“TYSON FURY & FRANK BRUNO JOIN FORCES IN BID TO KO STIGMA ON MENTAL HEALTH”
Side-by-side in a show of support – Tyson Fury and Frank Bruno today reveal how they are helping one another in their ongoing battles with mental ill health.
In an amazing new picture, the two legends of British boxing are seen sharing a ring in which they held an emotional heart-to-heart about their respective fights against bipolar disorder.
A video of their meeting will be released later this week. But today, ahead of World Mental Health Day next Sunday, the pair are issuing a plea encouraging others to speak out if they are struggling.
World Champion Tyson, 33, who is currently training in America for his upcoming fight with Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas on October 9 said: “I feel like now a lot more people are coming out with mental health stuff. And it's smashing the stigma for mental health but the more people talk about it the more it will overcome all that.”
Tyson, who has launched his own charity, the Tyson Fury Foundation to support those going through difficult times, added: “[Mental health] doesn’t care who you are. It doesn’t care if you are a king or a kid or anything… I just do one day at a time. That’s how I do my life.”
In a further show of support, Tyson is now a proud ambassador of the Frank Bruno Foundation which the retired 59-year-old launched five years ago.
Frank, who won the World Title himself in 1995, said: “Tyson’s had his struggles outside the ring and so have I. If we can speak openly about the difficult days we’ve suffered then nobody should feel ashamed to ask for help. It’s only by doing that, and by letting the shackles off, that you start to feel better.
“Mental Health Awareness Week is a great moment to remember how much more we all need to do to support those going through tough times. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
Tyson and Frank met earlier this year when Tyson was at his UK training base in Morecambe, Lancashire in an event organised by WOW HYDRATE.
The pair spoke for nearly two hours in the ring about their respective battles with bipolar. At the time of their meeting Tyson was preparing for a fight with rival boxer Anthony Joshua. That fight was subsequently postponed and Tyson is now preparing for his third fight against Deontay Wilder.
