Italo Mattioli: “Daniele Scardina is a good fighter, but we’ll beat him in Milan”
WBO Intercontinental super middleweight champion Daniele Scardina will defend against former WBA World champion Giovanni De Carolis on May 13 at Allianz Cloud
On May 13, at Allianz Cloud in Milan, Italy, Opi Since 82-Matchroom-DAZN will promote a major card with a tripleheader. In the main event WBO Intercontinental super middleweight champion Daniele Scardina (20-0, 16 KOs) will defend against former WBA World super middleweight champion Giovanni De Carolis (29-10-1, 13 KOs); European super bantamweight champion Mary Romero (7-2-2, 2 KOs) will defend against former Italian champion Maria Cecchi (6-0, 1 KO); and Vincenzo La Femina (10-0, 5 KOs) and Matteo Lecca (9-2, 4 KOs) will fight for the vacant Italian super bantamweight title, live on DAZN.
Scardina’s coach Dino Spencer had good words about his own fighter and about Giovanni De Carolis who is trained by Italo Mattioli and Luigi Ascani: “I think that Giovanni is a great professional,” Dino Spencer praised. “And he proved it going to Germany to fight WBA World super middleweight champion Vincent Feigenbutz and defeating him by 11th round TKO. I know that Giovanni trains for the entire year and not only when he has a fight. Daniele is the same and that’s very important. I know that Giovanni De Carolis lost some fights that he was supposed to win, but that happens to everybody. In my mind, Daniele will fight the WBA World champion on May 13.”
Now it’s Italo Mattioli’s turn to talk about the fight which is a a super-fight in Italy:
Mr. Mattioli, tell us about Giovanni De Carolis’ training.
“Giovanni is training as usual: very seriously and with passion. He trains at my gym Team Boxe Roma XI in Rome and at his gym which he opened in the small town of Monterosi in the province of Viterbo. Giovanni is an humble man who knows that only through hard work you can get results. He is motivated because he knows that winning the WBO Intercontinental super middleweight title could open the door to new major opportunities.”
What do you think of Daniele Scardina?
“I know him since he competed as an amateur: he is a good fighter and a good guy. When he was in Rome to work at a tv show he trained at my gym. Giovanni has more esperience and fought at an higher level than Daniele, but Daniele is 8 years younger (30 years old vs 38) and this will be a factor during the fight. Anyway, we are ready to beat him on May 13.”
Daniele Scardina’s fans are buying tickets fast and a sell-out is expected. Do you think that Giovanni’s supporters will travel to Milan for the fight?
“I know that they are buying tickets here in Rome, in Monterosi and other towns between Rome and Viterbo. On May 13 at Allianz Cloud Giovanni will have his fans supporting him and you will hear them!”
Last year in Manchester, England, Giovanni lost against now world champion Lerrone Richards for the European super middleweight championship. For two judges Richards won every round, one judge gave one round to Giovanni. Is there a reason for this loss or Richards was simply better?
“There is a reason: Giovanni had pain in the right arm and fought without using it. The next week he had surgery at that arm. Now he has recovered and will be at 100% on May 13.”
