Tommy Fury believes Jake Paul fight will happen in 2022
Tommy Fury (7-0, 4KOs) aims to fight Jake Paul (5-0, 4KOs) this year, after recovering from injury last year. The unbeaten light heavyweight is back in training already, preparing for his next fight.
The Mancunian was due to fight the Youtuber and boxing professional in December last year, but a bacterial chest infection and a broken rib meant he was forced to withdraw.
That gave American Paul the chance for a rematch against former MMA athlete Tyron Woodley, delivering a convincing one-punch knockout blow, and since then the 'The Proble Child' has poured scorn both on the veracity of Fury’s injury claims, and also on the chances of the pair finally facing off in the ring.
Speaking to talkSPORT, 22-year-old Fury explained that he had not given up on fighting his long-term rival Paul and had been training since January in preparation for a potential appearance on the Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte undercard in April.
'TNT' Fury explained: “I’m fine, I recently took myself away on a little training break.
“I’ve been training since January 1, flat out in camp and so I’m ready, fit and ready to go now.
“All of the hard work has been done and I don’t even have a fight lined up.
“I think that shows everybody how motivated I am, how serious I am about this sport and I’m looking to have a very active year.
“I’m looking to get that fight back at the end of the year.
“Jake Paul is not stupid. Tyson has just done 100,000 here in Wembley, who is he going to fight that’s going to get him any pay-per-views?
“Obviously anyone that watches Jake Paul isn’t tuning in to see Jake Paul because otherwise he would have had more than 60,000 pay-per-view buys.
“He needs a dance partner and he knows who that partner is.”
Asked if he could fight Paul, Fury said: “Definitely. I intend to get a victory out on the undercard. That’s the plan, that’s what is in the works at the minute and then we intend to look at that fight at the back end of the year.”
