Thomas Kindon collects Challenge belt
Guildford’s top boxing prospect, Thomas Kindon (8-0), won the British Challenge bantamweight belt with a points victory over Georgian, Mikheil Soloninkini (6-18-1) on April 1st at Tolworth Recreation Centre in Surrey on a Hunt Promotions show.
The 21-year-old based at Guildford City Gym, originally from Leeds, claimed his first belt in the pro ranks in what was also his first time stepping up to eight-rounds.
The new champion commented after the fight, “I had to stay on my feet a bit because he was a bit of a banger but I out-boxed him really.
“He had a strong left hook so I had to stay away from that, it was more of a technical fight for me.”
The opposing 21-year-old from Gori is the number 2 ranked bantamweight in his native country.
The eighth fight of Kindon’s two-year-long career served as his first eight-round contest, he said, “I felt good for the eight rounds, I don’t what’s next, I’ll just see what comes, I’m in no rush. We’ve got one belt now so I’d like to build on that and get another one. I’d like a Southern Area title but I’ll just see what comes in.”
The former six-time national amateur champion praised his fans for their vocal support on the special night for Team Kindon, he said, “The support was brilliant, the best I’ve ever had. I’m a local lad so everyone knew me and was cheering me on, it was unbelievable!”
Kindon, trained by Johnny Edwards and father Kazy, edges ever closer to the top 10 in the talent-laden 122lbs division, currently topped by IBF and WBA World champion, Carl Frampton.
There was a win on the undercard for Brighton boxer Lloyd Ellett (20-1) over Polish opponent Adam Grabiec (5-14).
The super-welterweight talent from Sussex plans an assault on titles this year after teaming up with manager Scott Welch in his Brighton gym.
