Who is Alex Theran Millares?
Facts you need to know about ‘The Beast from the East’ Anthony Yarde’s next opponent
World title contender Anthony Yarde (20-2, 19KOs) faces visiting light-heavyweight Alex Theran (23-5, 15KOs) on August 28 in Birmingham, live on BT Sport.
As it’s his first fight in the UK, BBN decided to find out some little-known facts about the Colombian right here:
Early Life
Alex David Theran Millares was born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1991. He went to school at the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe.
Located near the Caribbean Sea in the north of Colombia, there’s no shortage of talented stars from Barranquilla, including singer Shakira; actress Sofia Vergera; and Miss Universe 2015, Paulina Vega.
Family Life
Alex is engaged to his fiance Wendy Hernandez Mejica and has a young son. He also has a brother named Taylor Alexis Theran, and another called Nike David Theran Garcia, who is 24 years of age and currently 13-0 with 10KOs, and only just fought last month in July, earning an eight-round UD over tough test Helber Rojas (13-5-2, 11KOs) in his home country.
Barca
Alex is a huge Barcelona FC fan, and also enjoys playing football himself. His Instagram account contains pics of him posing in Paris St. Germain tops too.
Amateur Career
As an amateur, he represented his country and entered into the World Youth Championships in 2008 and lost a four-round points decision to future unified World welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.
In 2009, he defeated Terrell Gausha in the amateurs, who is 22-2-1 as a pro and a world title contender – he went the distance with Erislandy Lara for the WBA ‘Super’ and IBO World super-welterweight titles in 2017.
Another notable defeat on his amateur record was to Sergiy Derevyanchenko, who has challenged three times for world titles as a pro to Daniel Jacobs; Gennadiy Golovkin; and Jermall Charlo.
Alias
His nickname is ‘El Principe’, which translates to ‘Prince’.
Team ‘El Principe’
The ‘Prince’ is managed by Michael Reyes of Reyes Boxing Inc., from Salem, Massachusetts, America.
Pro Life
Theran turned pro in 2011 and made his debut on July 27 that year with a first-round stoppage win. He went on to win four of his first five fights with a first-round KO that same year.
He won the Colombia middleweight title to go 9-0 in June 2016, less than a year after his pro bow, and that was also via first-round KO.
He reached 15-0 to land a shot at the WBC Latino and WBA Fedelatin middleweight belts, which he won via unanimous decision, surprisingly over 11 rounds for some strange reason.
It was as a 16-0 titlist that he lost for the first time in April 2014 to 10-0 Russian Arif Magomedov, who ripped away Theran’s WBA Fedelatin strap in three short rounds.
His record from thereon became very patchy with seven wins and five defeats in his last 12 outings.
He failed to win the WBA Fedelatin light-heavyweight version of his old title in December 2012, and also fell short when challenging for the WBO NABO light-heavy belt in 2019.
He has fought 18 times in his native Colombia, nine times in the US, and once in Russia.
Style
In his own words, the boxer-puncher describes his boxing style as: "I have very fast legs and you will see a lot of movement. I don’t like to come with too much bite at first but my movement is very impressive. My movements are lateral movements and maneuvering around the ring. I am very quick."
The Mecca
The biggest fight of his 10-year career was against Tureano Johnson for the vacant WBC Silver and WBA International middleweight titles at Madison Square Garden in January 2015. Michael Buffer was the ring announcer and special guests at ringside included JAY Z; Rihanna; and Big Sean.
Heavy in the Game
For his last fight – a six-round points win in May – he started his training camp at 214lbs and managed to weigh in at 175lbs just eight weeks later.
KO Count
He has knocked out 15 of his 23 victims, which is equates to a respectable 65% KO ratio. However, he has been stopped five times from five losses, all within the first half of the contest.
