Artisan genius creates magnificent “Don Adolfo López Mateos Belt”
The World Boxing Council presented six beautiful new belts on the Cinco de Mayo weekend, which also saw the release of the stunning new Mazahua belt

Since the birth of the WBC, it's sought in a myriad of exceptional ways to innovate, improve and transform this spectacularly fabulous sport.
In the certain and the proven knowledge that the Green and Gold Belt is the zenith achievement emblem of highest Boxing acclaim, the WBC designed a series masterpiece belts in order to laud, applaud and reward the fights that have propelled boxing history into legend.
“The Don Adolfo López Mateos” belt, is the iconic emblem reserved for fighters who face each other on the two most important boxing dates for Mexico, the 5 May (Battle of Puebla) and September 16 (Independence Day).
The WBC sought out the most brilliant Mexican artisans who have used all of their magnificent skills to craft, mound, fashion and burnish the WBC belt into unparalleled, unmatched works of art, each representing the very best of their culture.
Huichol:
This handmade piece was made by the Huicholes under the leadership of the artist Luis de la Cruz López, who ensued this mystical piece with moons, suns, trees, labyrinths, spirals, mountains and cosmic oceans, embodying the art, religion and customs of the Huichols. A belt with conceptual art that honorably represented Mexico and boxing in a very special way.

Chiapaneco:
The “Bats’il Ajaw Belt” which means “True Hero”, was designed by artisans from Chiapas who in seeking to imprint the symbolism of this culture through iconic figures such as the serpent, symbol of the earth and fertility, created sheer beauty.
The lithe jaguar that represents power, strength and bravery, the corn symbol of creation, the flower that represents beauty and life and the diamond as the world.

Mayan
This belt has had two versions, but in both the Maya belt represents the leadership of the valiant jaguar warriors in search of fame in the eyes of Kukulcán, the deity that represents air and water, two of the most fluid elements in nature, such as the dance that takes place inside the boxing ring. A belt that symbolically represents the eighteen centuries of the Mayan Culture in the Year of the Mayans.
