The WBC Youth Title was first contested in 1999
It was September 29th, 1999, when the WBC Youth World Title was disputed for the very first time, in a fight that showcased the Annual Convention of the World Boxing Council held in Moscow, Russia.
Dmitry Kirillov, who was then 21 years old, faced South African Christopher Denicker for the vacant WBC youth world title in the super flyweight division, which he won by unanimous decision in a superb 10-round championship contest.
It was an encounter that marked a new pioneering direction for boxing, but especially for those young people in the fledgling stage of the professional ranks, aspiring for greatness.
Saint Petersburg's Dmitry 'The Baby' Kirillov defended his Youth title twice and went on to win the IBF Super-flyweight title in 2007. He ended his career in 2015 with 31 wins from 39 bouts.
The Youth Championship is specifically designed to guide those first crucial steps involving title fights. The maximum age to dispute the title is 23 years 11 months.
Some of the Youth champions who have strode on to conquer the full world title are: Samuel Peter, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, Chad Dawson, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Saul Álvarez, Kermit Cintrón, Timothy Bradley, Danny García, Humberto Soto, Rodolfo López, Daniel Ponce De León Tomoki Kameda, Leo Santa Cruz, Brian Viloria, Jorge Arce, Wanheng Menayothin, Devin Haney, among others.
One of the recent holders of the heavyweight version was British powerhouse Daniel Dubois, signed to Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren. Aged 22, he has won nine titles from 14 fights! The first of these was the WBC Youth heavyweight title to start him on his way. It's clear why his moniker is 'Every Belt', and he's fulfilling his promise.
