Kambosos vs Haney and remembering the legacy of the greatest WBC lightweights
World Boxing Council lightweight champion, Devin “The Dream” Haney, takes on Australian ace “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr., lightweight champion of the WBO, WBA, IBF and WBC franchise boxer, for the supremacy of the 135-pound division, and this eagerly awaited match is on Saturday, June 4 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
Kambosos, who was born and raised in Sydney, finally comes home to hold the biggest fight in Australian history. Event organizers hope to shatter the Australian attendance record of 51,026, set by the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn in 2017.
Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) turned pro in 2013 and fought his first 13 bouts in Australia before embarking on a quest for the world crown.
He earned his lightweight title shot with an October 2020 win over former British world champion Lee Selby in London.
13 months later, he travelled to New York and upset 10-1 favourite Teofimo Lopez by split decision in a veritable 12-round battle royal to become the unified lightweight champion.
Haney (27-0, 15 KOs), who`s based in Las Vegas, won seven national titles as an amateur and was clearly destined for stardom when he turned pro at age 17 in December 2015. He made his U.S. debut in April 2016 on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley III undercard in Las Vegas.
Before reaching legal drinking age in the United States, Haney who abstains, rose through the ranks with one-sided victories over veteran contenders Mason Menard, Juan Carlos Burgos and Antonio Moran. His knockout of Moran was voted ESPN’s 2019 KO of the Year.
Haney won the WBC lightweight title over Zaur Abdullaev in September 2019. He has successfully defended the Green and Gold Belt four times and has defeated former world champions in his last three fights.
The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Ferocious Promotions, Top Rank, Devin Haney Promotions, Duco Events and TEG Sport, will air live on ESPN.
