In addition to being one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, the undisputed super-middleweight champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez now holds a Guinness World Record.
15 years ago, on June 28, 2008, at Palenque Calle 2 in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, a 17-year-old Canelo starred in his 21st professional boxing fight against former world champion Miguel Vázquez, whom he defeated by unanimous decision.
The record breaker involved all seven Alvarez brothers. Each climbed into the ring and fought that night, earning them the Guinness recognition that was delivered this Wednesday, May 3, to the Álvarez Barragán family. The seven siblings accepted the award during the Canelo vs John Ryder press conference in Guadalajara.
Rigoberto “El Español”, Daniel “El Conde”, Ricardo “Dinamita”, Gonzalo “El León”, Víctor “El Matador”, Ramón “El inocento” and Saúl “El Canelo” fought and, although not all of them won that night, it was an historic evening.
In his boxing career, Rigoberto “El Español” (27-4, 20KO) was crowned WBC Interim super-welterweight champion in 2010 and then retired after back to back defeats to Austin Trout and Anthony Mundine. That night in June 2008, Rigoberto was 19-0 and won the Mexican super-middleweight title with a third-round knockout over Felipe Romero.
For Daniel “El Conde” (0-1) it was a debut and a departure. He lost on a split decision over four rounds to fellow debutant Oscar Pena and promptly retired.
Gonzalo “El León” (0-1) it was the same theme. He lost in round three of four to debutant Joel Gonzalez and didn't fight again.
Ricardo “Dinamita” (24-3-3, 14KO) won on points against Ivan Orona. He went on to win WBC Continental Americas and WBC Latino super-lightweight titles, and fought at the MGM Grand on the same card as Canelo vs Angulo.
Víctor “El Matador” (0-2) lost on his pro debut that night to 1-0 Jorge Silva with just 33 seconds left to go in the fourth round. He fought once more two years later and lost by knockout again.
Ramón “Inocente” (29-8-3, 16KO) defeated Jesus Romero that night in two. In his next bout, he won the vacant Jalisco State welterweight title, then went on to win the WBC Silver welterweight title in 2013, as well as IBF and WBO regional titles. He challeneged Erislandy Lara for the WBA World super-welterweight title in 2019, but he was over the weight limit and knocked out in round two.
Canelo has built a brilliant career and has established himself as a champion in four divisions.
He returns to fight in Mexico after 12 years. A fabled magical spell, in which he managed to draw the battle lines and portray himself as the face of boxing.
This fight will take place at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco this Saturday May 6.
