Welterweight Liam Wiseman joins pro ranks
Standout amateur, Liam Wiseman, has turned professional with Goodwin Boxing – aims for a March 2022 debut fight.
The 19-year-old Pompey puncher is big for a welterweight, standing at 6’1” with a 74” reach. Trained by his dad, Daron, Liam was a multiple regional champion who is now looking to replicate his success in the pro ranks in 2022.
The 140-pounder started boxing at home when just three-years-old, then joined the boxing gym aged five, sparring at Pinewood Starr ABC at six!
Now training at Team Wiseman in Waterlooville, he listed his amateur accolades, “I was a three-time national finalist, I lost on close decisions each time; I was five-time Southern Counties champion; eight-time Hampshire champion; I won numerous Box Cups; two-time national bronze medalist; all in all, I won 32 from 44 bouts.”
After hanging up his vest, Liam is hopeful of making his pro bow early next year, “So I’ve been granted my professional licence already, and will have my medicals over the next few weeks. Already been in talks with my promoter, Steve Goodwin, about my debut, which should be in March hopefully.
“I’m not too worried about where the first fight will be, Goodwin Boxing host a lot of shows at York Hall and that’s the home of boxing, where many have started out. Where I’m still only young, I know I’m in safe hands, so don’t want to jump in on big shows straightaway. Maybe in a year’s time I could get on a Sky Sports show.”
Liam trains with his dad Daron Wiseman and Adrian Donald, who guided Joel McIntyre to an English light-heavyweight title in 2016.
His Portsmouth-based gym also has unbeaten welterweight Bailey Donald (3-0) training there, so benefits from some quality sparring on tap, as well excellent sparring opportunities local to him too.
“I spar with the likes of Lee Selby, as well as Bailey at our gym,” he revealed. “We're looking at getting some sparring in with Chris Kongo soon. At the moment, we’re flat out in camp, so for this debut I’m going to be on fire and I plan to make a big statement. The start of my career will be more about the training camps for me, trying to learn as much as possible.”
