Skye Nicolson crowned WBC champion
Australian Skye Nicolson (8-0) was crowned interim WBC featherweight champion after defeating Argentine champion Sabrina Maribel Pérez (18-1-1, 2KO) by decision, this Friday in a fight presented by Matchroom Boxing in Tijuana, Mexico and that will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.
Nicolson has fought three times in the United States and the United Kingdom and once in her homeland of Australia. Now, she has been crowned world champion in Mexico.
The Aussie fought effectively from the beginning of the fight and little by little she took over the ring, with the Judges’ cards indicating 98-92, 99-91 and 97-93 to win by unanimous decision.
Husband and trainer of Sabrina, Diego Arrúa, died suddenly after suffering a massive heart attack during his wife’s fight in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Arrua collapsed in the corner between rounds nine and 10. Immediate medical attention was provided as Arrua was rushed to a nearby hospital before he was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30pm, local time.
“It is with deep sadness that we have been informed of the sudden death of Argentine coach Diego [Arrua],” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman revealed on social media Friday evening.
“The medical services did everything possible and he died at the QDEP general hospital.
“The entire WBC family sends our deepest condolences to their families and friends at this so sad time. Rest in peace.”
Arrua was only 58 years old at the time of his passing.
