Shawn Porter has now retired from the sport
Shawn Porter’s father explained why he pulled his son out of the WBO World welterweight title fight with Terence Crawford in the 10th round.
Porter was challenging for Crawford’s WBO belt at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, and whilst he was holding his own with the 34-year-old American champion, Crawford moved swiftly in the 10th to take the decision out of the judges hands.
Porter announced after the fight that he had retired from boxing and intended to do so regardless of the outcome of the fight.
A lack of desire may be why, as Kenny Porter told ESPN that the fighter had not prepared as he had wished ahead of the bout.
“Honestly? His preparation,” said Kenny Porter. “He didn’t prepare like I wanted him to.
“That just makes me say, ‘You know what? I don’t want him in that situation.’
“He fought a great fighter. The guy’s super sharp. And [Shawn is] at a deficit. It’s like fighting this guy blindfolded when you’re in a deficit like that. So I wasn’t going to let that happen to him.
“When guys get to a certain level, they believe they know what they’re doing, and they don’t necessarily take all the information,” Kenny said. “So this is where we’re at with it. And I had to make that decision.
“It was an easy decision for me. Easy. He lives right across the street from me. I’ll be having breakfast with him in the morning.”
