Shannon Courtenay vs Jamie Mitchell postponed
WBA World female bantamweight champion Shannon Courtenay announced today, July 27, that her maiden title defence to challenger Jamie Mitchell, set for August 14, is now postponed.
The pair were due to clash on Week 3 of this summer's Fight Camp series at the Matchroom Boxing headquarters in Essex. The championship clash had already been pushed back from July 31.
The 27-year-old world champion from Watford released this statement on social media: "I’m absolutely devastated but we’ve had to postpone this fight. I sustained an injury in training 4 weeks ago & we’ve tried to train through & around it but we have to be sensible & make the right decision for my career.
"My injury is getting better everyday but I need to be 100% when I step in that ring especially as my world title is on the line. This fight WILL happen and the date will be announced soon!! Thank you to all my loyal fans and sponsors standing by me during this tough time."
Matchroom are expected to announce a new date shortly.
This weekend's event at Matchroom HQ for Fight Camp Week 1 is topped by the Conor Benn (18-0, 12KOs) vs Adrian Granados (21-8-3, 15KOs) WBA Continental welterweight championship contest.
