Background
Britain's Shabaz Masoud will finally face Colombian Jose Sanmartin on Saturday night in Newcastle.
The pair were scheduled to meet on the undercard of last month's clash between Jack Catterall and Jorge Linares, but Masoud fell ill after the weigh-in forcing the fight to be postponed.
For the 27-year-old prospect from Stoke-on-Trent, it's vital for him to get back in the ring after a year long absence as he continues his progress towards challenging for domestic honours.
But he is up against an experienced operator who has won WBA Fedebol and WBA Fedecentro titles during his 12-year career.
Quotes
Masoud: “Pressure makes diamonds. To be honest, he’s a good opponent and a step up, but I am treating this as just another fight. Each fight is a World Title for me. I’m just coming to do me, and as long as I do that, I know I will get the W. We’ve done amazing with tickets and I want to thank everyone that’s showed out, on Saturday, let’s go.”
Sanmartin: “Thank you for the opportunity, we come here to do what we do, we come here to do our work. Masoud knows what I am coming for, we’re coming for war and the victory. He moves very well in the ring, but I think my experience will be too much for him.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Masoud is a real talent and his last three fights have included some exceptional matchmaking, and Sanmartin is yet another good match for Masoud, as an experienced fighter with over three times as many wins. He has lost two from his last three fights, including a third-round knockout loss to Mauricio Lara. Sanmartin likes to fight in close and calls himself a swarmer. He has a very high, tight guard so he can edge in close without catching too many shots on the way in. His feet seem very slow to me, he likes to plant his feet firmly on the ground to generate power behind his punches. He is patient and only likes to land meaningful punches. If Masoud can become the superior fighter on the inside and vary his shot selection from body to head then I can see him being able to catch the Colombian in the right spots to hurt him and maybe force a stoppage win. I'd imagine Sanmartin will be susceptible to body shots under his high elbows. But it was a big right to the head, then a left hook to the chin that caused two seperate knockdowns under the heavy hands of Lara. He has only been stopped by world champions, so it will take something special to hurt him, but I predict Shabaz to win on points if he isn't able to end it early.”
