Seren Ay Çetin became first female boxer from Turkey to win a WBC title
Turkish fighter Seren Ay Çetin defeated Eva Voraberger from Austria, two-time WBC world champion, in an entertaining fight in which she won the World Boxing Council Silver Bantamweight title, in a match held at the Caferağa Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey.
Seren Ay, who knocked out Voraberger early in the fourth round, became the first female boxer from Turkey to win a WBC-recognized title.
The athlete who trains at the Kadıköy Boxing Club, trains under the undefeated WBC endorsed ABCO heavyweight champion, Serdar Avcı.
“I made history and what really matters to me is that I defeated a double world champion. It’s an amazing feeling for me. I knew I had potential, but now I was able to show it. I am the first fighter from Turkey to win a boxing championship; And what better than the WBC Silver that puts me one step away from winning the absolute world title. I promise that I will be the first to bring the green and gold belt to our country in the near future. I will continue to work hard to show the world who I am,” said Seren.
“I not only defeated my rival, I was able to knock her out. This is important for me. I am very close to fulfilling my dreams. I would like to thank my coach Serdar Avcı and everyone who supported me. Believe me, I will achieve more for my people and for my country.
“We achieved a first in professional boxing in the history of Turkey. We brought the WBC Silver belt to our country, we are very happy. I thank my team very much. This is not going to end here, the WBC world championship is coming.”
