Background
As an amateur, Savannah Marshall was the first ever British female world champion after winning the 2012 World Amateur Championships, where she also became the only ever opponent to defeat Claressa Shields. Prior to that she acheived silver in the 2010 World Championships, then bronze in 2016, and won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games too.
After heartbreak in the 2016 Olympic Games, Savannah turned pro with floyd Mayweather and appeared on the undercard of his fight with Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in 2017. She split amicably with Mayweather Promotions soon after then linked up with Hennessey Sport and trainer Peter Fury. It was in only her fourth bout that won the WBA Inter-Continental Female super-middleweight title with her second and last ever points win. Since that fight in October 2018, she has knocked out six opponents in a row.
It was her second to last fight, in October 2020, that she defeated Hannah Rankin for the WBO World Female middleweight title in the seventh round, then defended six months later in April this year against challenger Maria Lindberg vis third-round KO.
Her next challenger is unbeaten Zambian Lolita Muzeya, 30-years-old, who enters into her first ever World title fight. She has a trio of victories over reigning Commonwealth lightweight champion Anisha Basheel, who Chantelle Cameron defeated in their 2019 WBC Silver lightweight title fight, which went the full 10-rounds. Muzeya managed to knock Basheel out in their first fight, followed by two unanimous decision wins over eight-rounds.
She has knocked out five of her last six victims, which included a hard-hitting 10-0 fighter. She comes into the contest with a half-decent background, but has never fought up at Marshall's level before, so it's a big leap up for the undefeated African.
Quotes
Marshall: "I became world champion in lockdown and my first defence was in lockdown as well, so this is my first chance to defend in front of my family and friends and let them enjoy the experience with me. I’m expecting a tough fight from Lolita. I’d be a fool to overlook anyone and she's unbeaten and she doesn’t know what it’s like to lose. So yeah, I'm expecting her to come forward and I'm expecting the best version of Lolita. I've always been confident in what I can do and yeah I know I'll beat Claressa [Shields], I know I'll beat Lolita but saying it and doing it are two different things. Lolita is in my way and I'll get shot of her then crack on with Claressa."
Muzeya: "She's a champion and I have watched her fights. She's a good boxer, but the only thing is, she has never faced someone like me. I'm well prepared and I'm confident in my skills. I can box on the back foot, I can come forward. So I'm excited for Saturday, I'm really excited. This is a big opportunity."
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Muzeya is a former WBC Silver welterweight champion but this is a big step up for her in levels against a top amateur and undefeated world champion. Savannah remains the only boxer to have ever defeated Claressa Shields and a win here could lead to the long-awaited rematch to settle their fiery rivalry once and for all. Two of Marshall's recent stoppages came in the third round, so I believe it'll happen again around that time, especially with the home support behind her and her eagerness to make a statement.”
