Savannah Marshall vs Hannah Rankin world title fight is cancelled
Unfortunately Savannah Marshall's trainer Peter Fury has tested positive for COVID-19.
Therefore, this saturday's WBO World Middleweight Title fight is now off the card.
All other fighters and teams tested negative so the entire Lewis Ritson vs Miguel Vazquez fight card will proceed as planned.
Hartlepool’s Marshall (8-0, 6 KOs) was looking for a win over Rankin to set up a future showdown with her old amateur foe Claressa Shields. ‘The Silent Assassin’ remains the only fighter to have inflicted a ring defeat on three-division World Champion Shields when she outpointed America’s ‘T-Rex’ in China en route to cementing herself as Britain's first ever female amateur World Champion in 2012.
Rankin, who lost to Shields in 2018, was planning on ripping up the script by taking the WBO crown back to Glasgow with her. Things were heating up between the pair ahead of fight night as Rankin publicly dismissed Marshall's win over Shields, stating, “All we ever hear about is that fight. The amateur circuit is nothing like the professional ranks. Claressa has gone on to do amazing things. She’s one of the best female fighters we are going to see in this generation. To just talk about an amateur win over her is nothing as far as I’m concerned.”
Marshall vs Rankin will be rearranged for a later date.
Matchroom stated that "The fight will be rescheduled in due course and our best wishes are with Peter."
BBN would also like to offer their best wishes to Peter to make a full recovery.
