Canelo to cruiserweight!
Four-weight history-making champion continues quest to secure his legacy in boxing
The World Boxing Council Board of Governors has unanimously voted to approve Saul Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs) to fight for the WBC cruiserweight title, in May or June, against the reigning champion Ilunga Junior Makabu (28-2, 25KOs).
It was proposed by his coach and manager Eddy Reynoso at the mandatory defenses committee at the WBC 59th Convention in Mexico City.
David Benavidez is approved to fight for the Interim super middleweight title.
The 34-year-old southpaw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a national hero since wining the WBC cruiserweight title in January 2020. His sole title defence was in December 2020 to Richard Riakporhe's (12-0, 8KOs) next opponent Olanrewaju Durodola (36-8, 33KOs), vis seventh-round stoppage.
He is currently riding on a nine-fight winning streak and hasn't lost since May 2016, over five-and-a-half years ago to Tony Bellew in Everton FC's stadium. His only other loss was on his pro debut back 2008. He was knocked out within the first 30 seconds of his pro career, but bounced back from that disastrious pro bow to win his next 13 fights by KO, his first points win resulted in lifting the WBC Silver crusierweight title.
Canelo made history this month by becoming the sport's first ever undisputed super-middleweight chamipion. Having won world titles at light-middle, middle, super-middle and light-heavyweight, the Mexican superstar, who is unarguably the world's pound-for-pound best right now, is aiming to become a five-weight world champion to further secure a legacy in boxing.
