“Razor” Knapp wins ABU super welterweight title
This Saturday, June 11, saw the ABU super welterweight rematch between newly crowned champion Roarke “Razor” Knapp (14-1-1, 11KO) and Brandon “Fast Guns” Thysse (14-3-1, 12KO) take place at Kempton Park, South Africa.
The first meeting between the two, back in 2019, was a war until the seventh round, when Thysse knocked out the youngster Knapp with an accurate blow. Almost three years have passed since this, so the two fighters have undoubtedly improved a lot and willing to show it. Since that single loss, Knap had gone to score four straight knockouts and Thysse had back to back stoppage wins going into this bout.
The rematch did not disappoint anyone, it was a power to power match where both warriors showed their best version. With 12KOs fom 14 victories, Thysse rocked 24-year-old Knapp in the first round with a punch an average fighter would have dropped from, but Knapp took the shot in his stride.
The contest was very close with alternating dominance of both warriors, who left everything in the ring that night.
Judge Mfundo Mvandaba scored it 116-112 for Knapp, Thabo Spampool scored 115-113 for Thysse, while Ben Ncapayi scored it 115-114 for Knapp.
The African Boxing Union title is the third belt Knapp has won during his six-year career. He won the IBO World Youth super-welterweight title in his 13th bout, then he picked up the WBA Pan African title at middleweight in his penultimate fight. All three titles have been claimed during his last four fights.
