Remembering "The Great Thin Man" Alexis Argüello
Andrés Alexis Argüello Bohorquez was born in Managua, Nicaragua, on April 19th, 1952.
Alexis was one of the most brilliant boxers in history. He was a triple world champion, reigning at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight.
His spectacularity and his great efficiency in the ring made him a superstar who did the most important thing of his career in the ring in the United States.
He was nicknamed the “Skinny Explosive” for his thin physique, unusual height for his division and the tremendous power that he judiciously possesses in his fists, which led him to win 62 times by knockout in a total of 77 victories that he achieved throughout his career. He fought professionally from 1968 to 1995.
Alexis is considered among the best in history in the three divisions in which he was world champion.
At one point in his career, he decided to invade super lightweight and contested Aaron Pryor’s respective world crown twice.
In the first fight between them they offered such a fabulous show that “The Ring” magazine in New York considered it the “Fight of the Decade” (80s).
In 2008 during the Beijing Olympic Games, he was the flag bearer of the Nicaraguan Team.
Alexis is inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York.
Today we fondly remember Alexis, on what would have been his 71st birthday, with great affection and recognition of his greatness as a man and as a boxer.
