Kacper Meyna wins WBC Francophone title by KO
In an all-Polish heavyweight bout, Kacper Meyna (11-1, 7KO) captured the WBC Francophone title by defeating Krzysztof Twardowski (10-5, 7KO) by ninth-round knockout.
From Nowy Sacz, Polish cruiserweight title contender Twardowski’s strategy was to move, jab and try to avoid trading power punches, as 23-year-old Meyna had a weight advantage of close to 20kg (44 lb) and was coming off four quick stoppage wins.
Twardowski usually operates at cruiserweight and British fight fans may remember the name after he lost on points to Richard Riakporhe in 2021. Despite Riakporhe's 75% KO ratio, the 27-year-old Polish fighter was able to go the distance over eight rounds and even survived a knockdown in the final round.
With this approach, Twardowski did reduce the dangerous moments and had some positive results with some sharp jabs, but overall he lost rounds and couldn’t match his opponent’s work rate. With his wild haymakers and imposing his power during sporadic moments in short-medium distance, Meyna connected the most significant punches against a too cautious Twardowski, who used his right hand very little.
In the penultimate ninth round, Golubie's Meyna landed a hard overhead right and a straight left that sent Twardowski to the canvas. The boxer was rocked by hooks to the head after the restart before referee Daniel Van de Wiele rightfully stopped the fight with 90 seconds to go.
The 6′ 1½″ Meyna is a two-time Polish heavyweight champion, both times winning the vacant national title via first-round knockouts.
He is ranked as Poland's fourth best heavyweight, behind unbeaten Damian Knyba and Marcin Siwy, and No.1 rated Brooklyn-based Adam Kownacki. BoxRec also rate him within the top 100 heavyweights in the world.
