Berghult wins WBC super welterweight title
Swedish fighter Patricia Berghult (15-0) won the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight title by defeating Switzerland’s Olivia Belkacem (10-3) this Saturday, November 27, in Sweden.
It was a tough fight for both of them, but Berghult showed the highest quality to win the biggest victory of her career.
The Judges’ scorecards were 97-93 twice and 96-94, all in favour of new champion Berghult.
It was the first fight in exactly two years for the Swede, who had defeated Briton Hannah Rankin to win the IBO and WBC Interim world titles on November 27, 2019, in Malta.
Undefeated in 15 bouts, the 27-year-old will have some big unifications fights or defences ahead of her in 2022. A rematch with Scotland's Hannah Rankin could be tasty now that Rankin is a WBA and IBO World titlist, plus their first fight was very close with one judge scoring is just one round apart.
