Background
It’s a classic boxer vs puncher match-up with the defending champion revered for his extreme skill and challenger Dubois known for his destructive power.
Usyk holds the WBA ‘Super’, IBF, WBO and IBO world heavyweight titles and Dubois comes into the contest as the WBA ‘Regular’ beltholder, which makes him the mandatory contender.
As the challenger, 25-year-old Londoner Dubois has graciously agreed to travel to Poland, which neighbours Usyk’s native Ukraine, who are still embroiled in a conflict with Russia.
The Central European is a former undisputed cruiserweight champion and now unified heavyweight champ, known for being one of the purest boxers of this generation. He has incredible feet, fast hands, genius movement and can outbox anyone placed in front of him. His 350 amateur bouts (winning 335) and 20 pro fights means that he has experienced and bested every style of opponent on earth.
Dubois also had a successful amateur career, in his own right, as an English and International champion, winning 69 from 75 bouts, but is still considerably dwarfed by the achievements of a European, World and Olympic champion.
As professionals, they have both boxed in 20 bouts – Usyk is unbeaten and Dubois has lost just once read more…
Quotes
Daniel Dubois: "I will shock the world!"
Frank Warren: "Daniel Dubois is going to absolutely screw this up for all of them [in the heavyweight division], he's gonna knock him the f**k out!"
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Although largely written off, both fighter Dubois and long-term promoter Warren are fully confident of upsetting the odds over in Poland. From the outset, it appears exactly how it looks on paper – a 'Super' champion versus a 'Regular' champion. Usyk is supremely skilled but Dubois is extremely powerful. It's going to be an interesting contest, which could play out a number of different ways regardless of how one-sided you see it. With Don Charles in his corner, are they going to rush Usyk and sit on his chest like Chisora did? If Dubois aims to knock Usyk out, then he has to get him in the first three rounds, otherwise the Ukrainian will have downloaded the data he needs to cruise the remaining rounds. Fingers crossed for the Brit, but I see Usyk either boxing skillfully on the outside to a unanimous decision or securing a stoppage in the later rounds once Dubois has been broken down physically and mentally.”
