Ohara Davies stopped Lewis Ritson to set up WBA super-lightweight title shot
WBA #2 Ohara Davies (25-2, 18KO) broke down WBA #4 Lewis Ritson (25-3, 13KO) during his WBA Eliminator on Saturday, March 4, in Newcastle to set up a WBA World title shot next.
The Hackney man is now in line to challenge WBA super-lightweight world champion Alberto Puello (21-0, 10KO), if the Dominican titleholder successfully defends his belt to Rolando Romero in May.
Both Ritson and Davies had very similar records, with two losses each and the Londoner with one win extra then Ritson. They both beat Mexican Miguel Vazquez by decision in controversial judging, where many believe the former world champion was robbed.
Davies came into the clash on a six-fight winning streak after defeat to Jack Catterall on points over four years ago – winning the MTK Golden Contract tournament that gave his stock the boost it needed.
300 miles from home, Davies systematically broke down the home fighter and stopped him in the ninth of a schedued 12 with a left hook to the body.
Davies worked to the body all fight long, eventually paying off in the ninth round, the stoppage recorded at 2:23.
Post-fight, Davies talked about how disciplined he was for this fight, not going out and working harder than ever in training, which paid dividends for him.
