Mikaelian TKO’s Makabu to win the WBC cruiserweight title
Armenian Noel Mikaelian won the cruiserweight title of the WBC, by technically knocking out the former world champion from the Congo, Ilunga Makabu, in the third round on a card presented by Don King, at the Miami Jai Alai Casino in Miami, Florida.
Trained by Pedro Diaz, Noel who was inspired heart and soul, knocked down Makabu with a double right hand with one minute remaining in the second round and then accelerated to deliver a sequence of blows that had no response, trying to end the fight, but Makabu managed to get out of that complicated situation.
The ring doctor examined Makabu before starting the third round, but Mikaelian made sure to put an end to the fight with a six-punch combination to knock him down again, causing Referee Gene Del Bianco to stop the fight when he observed that Makabu was sustaining a barrage of blows.
It was the 33-year-old's first fight in 19 months but he showed no signs of ringrust with such a dominant performance and quick victory.
