Acosta vs Garcia took place on Cinco de Mayo
Mexican Bryan Acosta (17-0, 6KOs) stopped compatriot Benito Sánchez García (15-6-2, 3KOs) on the celebrated Cinco de Mayo holiday for the WBC Continental Americas super-featherweight title, at the REBEL Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Canada.
The 22-year-old challenger, known as 'Canelito' from Jalisco, had held regional titles with the WBC before. He was the WBC FECOMBOX bantamweight champion three years ago in 2019, but his record has been checkered ever since, only winning half of his last eight fights. However, he was on form, coming into the contest undefeated in his last four fights.
Known as 'Latino', Bryan Jesús Acosta García, 23 from Sonora, remains unbeaten in his six-year career, and this was his third 10-round bout. In the Main Event of a Lee Baxter Promotions show, top prospect Acosta stopped Garcia in the 10th and final round of the championship fight, in what was his second straight appearance in Toronto.
In the first round, a left hook from Acosta direct on the chin dropped Garcia for an eight-count. Despite the worst possible start, Garcia managed to get through the rest of the round. In the third round’s final seconds, Acosta landed a right uppercut on the chin, rocking Garcia again.
In the middle rounds, Garcia allowed Acosta to become the aggressor. In the sixth round, Acosta landed an overhand right on the chin, wobbling Garcia further still, who was having a torrid time in there. Acosta then turned southpaw for the rest of the round. In the seventh round, Acosta turned back to orthodox halfway through continuing to be the aggressor, forcing the action, outscoring Garcia.
In the final seconds of the eighth segment, both fighters produced the best exchange of the fight up to that point. In the final minute of the ninth stanza, Garcia landed a double left hook to the chin of Acosta, who immediately answered back by landing an identical pair of left hooks on Garcia's chin.
In final round, Acosta had Garcia hurt in the opening seconds, driving him into a neutral corner. Referee Mark Simmons instantly broke them up. Acosta managed to hurt Garcia again shortly later with a flurry of punches. Near the halfway mark of the round, Acosta had Garcia defenseless on the ropes when referee Simmons wisely called a halt.
In the Co-Main Event, Ireland’s two-time Irish National Amateur champion Lee “El Champo” Reeves defeated Mexico’s Sebastian Diaz Maldonado for the vacant NABF Super Lightweight title over eight rounds.
