WBC Silver champ Nick Ball could be in line to face featherweight champ Rey Vargas this year
Undefeated WBC Silver featherweight champion Nick Ball (18-0, 11KOs) is ranked No.4 in the World Boxing Council’s featherweight rankings and will be in line for a world title shot very soon, according to WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman.
Heavy-handed Brit boxer Nick Ball defended his WBC Silver title for a third time in his most recent performance on May 27 in Belfast when he stopped unbeaten former IBO World champion, Ludumo Lamati (21-1-1, 11KO), in the 12th round of their championship fight, live on BT Sport.
The South African’s team threw in the towel at the SSE Arena with just seconds to go, then worryingly collapsed in the corner just moments later. Celebrations were stalled as 25-year-old Ball and everyone else shared concerns for the visiting fighter, who was taken to hospital immediately with a suspected bleed on the brain.
Recent reports have confirmed that Lamati is now out of intensive care, talking with family, eating and drinking, and showing signs of recovery.
“Boxing is a contact sport, heavily regulated, and the way the British Boxing Board of Control underwent their attention of the fighters’ safety, we’re very proud to see the medical attention, the care for the fighters, and it’s a great relief that the South African is getting better,” Sulaiman said.
Relieved by the news, 53-year-old Mexican Mauricio was able to heap praise upon the World Boxing Council’s No.4 ranked featherweight for his incredible performance, “Well Nick Ball is a sensational fighter,” he beamed. “Nick Ball has come along, it’s the third defence of the Silver title and he’s sure coming soon to a world title fight.”
Last December, Ball was nominated for Prospect of the Year Award 2022 by the World Boxing Council after winning three WBC Silver championships contests within seven months, all via knockout – in rounds 1, 6 and 12!
Trained by Paul Stevenson and Anthony Humphreys at the famous Everton Red Triangle gym, Liverpool’s Ball has declared he is more than ready to challenge reigning WBC featherweight champion Rey Vargas, who failed in his recent attempt to win a world title at a third weight class when he was unanimous decisioned by WBC world super-featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster in February.
