Background
‘Leigh-thal’ memorably stopped Michael Conlan in the 12th and final round of his epic first defence of the WBA 126lbs title back in March 2022, knocking the Irishman out of the ring in brutal fashion to end their Fight of the Year stunner with just minutes to go. But in his second defence, that pesky Mexican known as ‘Bronco’ came over to upset yet another Brit, a nasty habit he keeps making, just ask Josh Warrington.
During their first meeting in February in Nottingham, 25-year-old Lara delivered a spectacular knockout to Wood to take the crown, it was felt that the fight deserved a rematch because of the parity it had and the excitement it provided.
34-year-old Wood was performing well and dominating on the scorecards until the seventh round, when an impact to the face by Lara put him in a bad way and changed the balance in favour of the hard-hitting Mexican to force the British corner to throw in the towel.
Now, the rivals are set to clash again in what will be an even bigger stage than the first affair.
Facts about Mauricio LaraQuotes
Leigh Wood: “Mauricio Lara has made things personal between us with the disrespect he showed me regarding my injury and my country. I’m going to show him what I’m all about.”
Mauricio Lara: “Your time has come Leigh Wood, no “injury” can save you now from this.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “I know that Wood has the quality and ability to beat Lara, but it’s the Mexican's power that has seen him KO his last four opponents that troubles me. He has youth and power on his side. For me, I think it will be a repeat knockout victory for Lara, but will be hoping Wood can box smart to a points decision to win his belt back.”
